Advanced coding and signal processing techniques are essential tools towards extending the
capacity of magnetic media beyond the present limit. However, for high density recording
these processes become too complex. This paper presents a new interleaved constrained
single parity-check code with Bahl Cocke Jelinek Raviv (BCJR) detector for improving the
bit error performance of magnetic recording channel. The BCJR detector handled the code
constraints whereas the dithered relative prime (DRP) and the square interleaver provided
adequate spreading of the data. The results show that the new constrained single parity-
check code with interleaving achieved a coding gain of about 3dB, thus providing a better
compromise in terms of performance and implementation complexity. A further coding gain
was also achieved by concatenating the two interleavers although with slight loss in code
rate.
