Abstract

This study examined the factors that contribute to the success of Small and Medium-Sized
Enterprises (SMEs) owned by women in Katsina state, Nigeria. The study aims to evaluate
the influence of financial capital, motivation and goal orientation, social networking,
government support, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on the overall
success of SMEs owned by women. The study population consists of female entrepreneurs
who are operating SMEs in Katsina state. A purposive sampling method was used to obtain a
sample size of 200 participants. The gathered data were analysed using Partial Least
Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The results demonstrate a strong and
statistically significant correlation between financial capital, motivation and goal
orientation, social networking, and government support with business success. Nevertheless,
ICT did not demonstrate a substantial impact on the success of SMEs. These findings suggest
that in order to empower women entrepreneurs and improve the success of their SMEs in
Katsina state, it is recommended to implement customised financial assistance programmes,
motivational activities, networking platforms, and focused ICT training.
