About the Journal
Instructions to Authors
Scope
The Nigerian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences publishes original articles and reviews on
pharmaceutical and related clinical and basic sciences. It will also serve as a medium for
publicizing and communicating the ever growing and changing development in the field of
pharmacy practice. The journal will further serve as a medium for continuing Education in
Pharmacy.
Editorial Policy
The language of the journal is English. This journal will only consider original articles which
have not been published previously or not considered in part or whole for publication
elsewhere in the same or any other language. Authors should prepare their manuscripts
submitted to the journal exactly according to instruction provided. As a policy the opinion of
reviewers with cognate expertise in the subject will be sought before decision is made as to
whether the paper should be accepted, rejected or returned to the authors for revision. The
journal reserves the exclusive right to make any further changes and language corrections
necessary in a manuscript accepted for publication so that it conforms to the requirement of the
journal.
Communications published in this journal comprise articles, short communication, reviews and
letters to the editors.
1. Articles – are intended for presentation of such findings of original scientific
research in unabbreviated form.
2. Short communication – are intended for presentation of such findings, which do
not warrant full length publication, or of preliminary finding for rapid publication.
3. Review articles – are intended to evaluate existing state of knowledge on a
particular aspect of pharmaceutical and/or allied basic and medical sciences.
Reviews are usually solicited by the journal however; persons interested in writing a
review paper for the journal should contact the editorial office.
4. Letters to the Editor – are a forum for discussion for readers wishing to comment
briefly on matter of general interest or on papers published in this journal.

Categories of Manuscripts
Articles
Articles should contain the following sections in this order: title page, key words (5-6 in
alphabetical order) summary/abstract, introduction, experimental data/procedure/method,
results, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgement (if any) and references. The
Summary/abstract, should state in no more than 15 to 20 lines the purpose of the study, basic
procedures, main findings and conclusions. Introduction should outline the purpose of the
study; provide background information and objective of the study. Experimental, sufficient
detail should be given so that the experiment can be repeated. Results, authors’ results only
without interpretation should be presented. Tables and figures should not be repeated
unnecessarily in the text. Discussion should provide an interpretation of the results in relation
to findings of other investigators. Conclusion should be unambiguous and clearly derived from
findings of the study.
Short Communications
Should exactly follow the same format and style as described under articles.
Reviews
Should consist of title page, summary, text with table/or figures (if any), references, tables
and/or figures (if any). Headed subdivisions within the text are desirable but at the discretion of
the author. The abstract should summarize in not more than 150 words the content of the
review and state any conclusion.
Letters to the Editors
Letters should not exceed three typewritten pages in length. A short title should be placed at the
start of the text and the names of the authors with address (including email and telephone
number) at the end of the text. There should generally be no more than three authors and five
references.
Format and Style
All sections of the manuscript must be typewritten in Times New Roman on A4 page layout with
double line spacing and a margin of 2 cm on all four sides of the document. A full length paper
should not normally exceed 10 printed pages including tables, and figures.
The title page should contain in this order: the full title without abbreviations; surname first
followed by initials of the authors, the department, institution and address of each author
without abbreviations. An e-mail address and telephone number of the author responsible for
inquiries and reprints should be indicated. The words ‘Table’ and ‘Figure’ should not be
abbreviated.
Figures
Charts must not be presented as pictures, figures such as spectra and plates such as
chromatograms and microscopical field of view should be presented as scanned pictures but not
redrawn. All Figures must be cited in the text.
Tables
Tables should be numbered in Roman numerals and must be typewritten with the legends
above the Table. Only the first letter of the first word of legends and headings at the top and the
side should be capitalized. Tables must not be submitted as a picture. The “word” Table should
not be abbreviated in either the text or legends. All Tables must be cited in the text.
References
References to literatures should be referred by Name (surname) and year (Harvard System) in
the text and listed alphabetically in chorological order at the end of the manuscript. The use of
the abbreviation (et al.,) should be italicized and limited to the text where more than two
authors are cited. References to journal articles should state all authors, the journal title in the
internationally accepted abbreviated form, volume number and pages. Articles published in the
same year should be distinguished by appending alphabets a,b,c to the year. For books, list the
author(s) or editor(s), title, publisher, place and date of publication followed by the volume
and/or page number if a part is referred to. Always give the title of the book in the original
language, if the original title is not printed in Latin characters, use the standard transliteration
employed by Chemical Abstracts. Note that name of the journal must be written in italics.
Manuscripts or books in press can be cited. The following examples will serve as guide and be
strictly adhered to.

Proofs and Reprints
Authors receive proofs of all categories except letters to editors. Proofs are sent directly to the
corresponding author, and should be corrected and returned immediately. For technical reasons
only minor changes can be made. Corresponding author will receive one copy of the journal free
of charge. However, additional copies can be obtained at authors own expense at the cost of two
thousand five hundred naira (N2, 500.00) only per copy.
Processing Fee
Non-refundable processing fee is five Thousand Naira (N5, 000.00), equivalent to US $15.00
which must be paid along with submission of the manuscript.
Manuscript Charges
Accepted manuscript will attract a charge of fifteen Thousand Naira (N15, 000.00) for article of
not more than Five (5) Journal pages. Any additional page attracts a charge of one Thousand five
hundred naira (N1, 500.00) only.
