This study examines the learning conditions of FFL at Government Secondary
School, West of Mines, Jos, Plateau State. It seeks to investigate learners’
perceptions of the importance of French, assess the influence of the school
environment on language learning, and determine students’ level of interest in the
language. Anchored in socio-constructivist theory, the study adopts a quantitative
approach using a questionnaire administered to sixty Senior Secondary School
students. The findings indicate that learners demonstrate considerable interest in
French because of the academic, professional, and communicative opportunities
associated with the language. The results further reveal that the school's proximity
to the Alliance Française and the Centre for French Training and Documentation
(CFTD) positively influences the learning process. The study recommends
strengthening interactive classroom activities, oral communication practice,
cultural programs, and the integration of digital resources to enhance the teaching
and learning of French in Nigerian secondary schools.
