Graphic war narratives have been studied in different ways to show time and space
putting into consideration the panel layout in a page. But this study does not talk
about the panel layout, rather it uses images and words in the texts to investigate
how time, space, date, and building mentioned and shown in the multimodal texts
are able to represent the real history of the Centralafrican and Rwandan war.
Applying trauma studies, conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy as
theoretical frameworks, this work studies Tempête sur Bangui volumes 1 and 2 by
Didier Kassaï, Maison sans fenêtres by Marc Ellison and Didier Kassaï,
Déogratias by Jean-Philippe Stassen and Le grand voyage d'Alice by Gaspard
Talmasse. These theories in collaboration with the chronotope propagated by
Mikhail Bakhtin aim to exteriorize the four distinct levels of chronotopes which are:
plot generating ability of chronotopes, the representational significance, the base
for distinguishing types of genres and the semantic importance of chronotopes.
Using textual and visual analysis as methodological approach, this study shows the
obvious collision of the real world (the representing world) and the comic world
(the represented world) which shows that these graphic war narratives represent
the real history of the Centralafrican war and the Rwandan genocide.
