Abstract

This paper studied “workplace ergonomics and organizational efficiency with a focus on Abia
State University Uturu, Nigeria”. It examined the extent to which design of workstation, work
equipment, and provision of recreational facilities affected the efficiency of Abia State
University Uturu, Okigwe. The population of the study was the 2,196 staff of the university. A
sample size of 150 academic and non-academic staff formed the population of this study.
Survey research design was adopted and a structured questionnaire was used to elucidate
responses from respondents. Data generated from the field survey were subjected to initial
diagnostic for reliability to ascertain the usability of the study constructs. Data were analyzed
using Pearson’s correlation analysis and further subjected to multiple linear regression
analysis to test the stated hypotheses. Results of the correlation showed that design of
workstation had a=0.859, work equipment had a=0.793 and recreational facilities had
a=0.879 respectively. These measures were well above the threshold of 0.7 Cronbach Alpha
and showed positive effect on organizational efficiency (a=0.751}. This implies that variations
in workplace ergonomics would significantly influence organizational efficiency in Abia State
University Uturu Okigwe, Nigeria. The conclusion and recommendation of this study is that
provision of adequate workplace ergonomics factors will positively influence organizational
efficiency. This implies that if the ergonomics factors are inadequate or poorly designed,
organizational efficiency will be adversely affected.
