OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY IN HOME ECONOMICS LABORATORIES AMONG STAFF IN TERTIARY INSTITUTION IN ZARIA, KADUNA STATE

Abstract

This study assessed the occupational safety in home economics laboratories among staff in
tertiary institution in Zaria, Kaduna State. Three (3) objectives and research questions was
formulated. Survey research design was used. A total sample of forty respondents were
randomly selected using simple random techniques. The instrument employed in this study was
researcher design questionnaire. With a Cronbach Alpha Reliability index of 0.89 which showed
that the instrument was reliable. Simple percentage and frequency count was used to answer the
research questions raised. Results shows that 50% are classroom converted into laboratory,
55% of the hazards were cuts from the laboratory and 50% of the occupational safety measures
were available. It can be concluded that safety of any environment, lives and properties should
be observed by workers at the workplace through the use of various safety medium so as to
achieve success in safeguarding lives, properties and environment. It was recommended that the
Schools / sponsors should 'provide a standard laboratory for ensure proper performance of
practical work and laboratory staff must be conversant with safety rules and practices.
