Abstract

The Study examined fuelwood utilization and its effects on educational development in
Metropolitan Zaria. Research objectives include identifying the sources of fuelwood supplied to
the metropolis; the role of children in the supply system as well as its effect on educational
development. Data sets were collected through the use of questionnaires administered to fifty
fuelwood vendors in the metropolis. The vendors were purposively selected to cover the length
and breadth of the study area. The data were analyzed using simple statistical tools such as
percentages and presented with the aid of tables and charts. Results reveal that 62% of the
vendors get their supplies from outside Zaria, though within the State. Also, 46% of the laborers
used are children of school going age who, though, do not attend school. It was concluded that
the use of children retards their educational development and it was recommended that
legislation against child labor should aim at protecting the rights of children who fall victim of
child labor and educational deprivation.
