Abstract

The study assessed the knowledge of solid waste management among household heads of Imo
State, Nigeria. One (1) purpose of the study, research question and hypothesis were formulated
and answered. Ex-post-facto research design was used. The population of this study comprised
of all household heads in Imo state. The total population was three million, nine hundred and
twenty seven thousand, five hundred and sixty three (3,927,563). A multi-stage approach
involved a stratified random sampling procedure, simple random sampling procedure and
proportionate procedure was used to select the respondents. The sample size was three hundred
and eighty one (381) household heads. The instrument used for data collection was a
questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed with Statistical Package for Social Science (version
22) using frequencies, percentages, mean, standard deviation, one sample t - test. Findings
revealed that the knowledge of the household head of Imo State on solid waste management is
significant (t = 3.117; p = 0.01). Based on the findings, conclusion was made that the knowledge
of the household heads in Imo State on solid waste management is positive. On the basis of this
finding, recommendation were made that seminar/workshop and community health related
programme should be organized by state government and nongovernmental organizations on
solid waste management in other to sustain the positive knowledge of solid waste management.
