Abstract

The study was carried out to examine the influence of mass media in solving nutritional problem among
Junior Secondary School Students in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State. The study
aimed to find out whether mass media has played any role in solving nutritional problem. Descriptive
survey research design was adopted for the study and two research questions and hypotheses were
generated and tested. Two hundred junior secondary school students were randomly selected through the
simple random sampling technique. The main research instrument used was structured closed ended
questionnaire, the data collected were analyzed using Chi-Square (X2) analysis was adopted to test the
hypothesis at 0.05 alpha level. The findings showed that all the hypotheses tested were all rejected. Based
on the findings it was concluded that mass media plays a major role in solving nutritional problem among
junior secondary school students in Ilorin south local government area of Kwara State. It was
recommended that food and entertainment industries should jointly adopt meaningful, uniform nutrition
standards for marketing food and beverages to children, as well as a uniform standard for what constitute
marketing to children.
