PARENTAL SEPARATION AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF NCE STUDENTS IN FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION KATSINA

The study accessed parental separation and its influence on the academic performance of NCE students in Federal
College of Education Katsina. The objective of the study was to ascertain the difference in the performance of degree
students from separated homes and students from intact homes. Also, the study aimed at determining the relationship
between parental separation and students' performance in Federal College of Education Katsina. This study adopted a
descriptive survey method. The population for this study consisted of all degree students of Federal College of
Education Katsina. one hundred and thirty-five (135) respondents were drawn from 3 departments namely: Department
of Home Economics, Department of Early Child Education and Department of Guidance and Counselling. Purposive
and simple random sampling was used to select the sample of the study. structured questionnaire was used as an
instrument for data collection. Mean and standard deviation was used to analyse the research questions, while t-test
was used for hypothesis one and PPMC for hypothesis two at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that
there is difference in the performance of students from separated homes and students from intact homes in favour of
students from intact homes. The findings also revealed that parental separation negatively influences the academic
performance of students. The study recommends among others that couples should do all that they can to avoid all
source of marital life disruptions that may affect their children’s academic performance also, Marriage partners should
seek advice from marriage counseling experts, in order to curb or eradicate unnecessary ills to children’s performance
in school.
