ABSTRACT

Nigeria has gone through series of reforms for national development right from colonial times to date in order to foster development especially in the area of education.Alas! The desired development is yet to be attained, since Nigeria is yet to meet up with 75% UNESCO literacy level for technological take off. This is the reason why this paper seeks to address the present Transformation Agenda under President Goodluck Jonathan with education as the main thrust. In this light, the historical research design was adopted. The content analysis was employed in analyzing the data collected. This paper highlights funding shortages, corruption and government poor planning as the major problems affecting education in Nigeria. The paper concludes by recommending that government should handle the problems of funding shortages by ensuring that they adhere to UNESCO’s recommendation of 25% of annual national budget allocation to education to enable the institutions of learning in the country improve their infrastructures (buildings e.g hostels, classrooms, lecture halls, roads, power and water resources), knowledge facilities – library accession, computing facilities and teaching aids; research funding; recreational facilities; and welfare packages for teachers/lecturers, administrative staff and students in order to provide an atmosphere that allows a conducive teaching and learning which will in turn produce an enlightened citizenry that supports government programmes like the Transformation Agenda for national development
