Higher education management as a subset of the entire educational management is critical to the development of an educational system of a nation. Higher education is the apex of the learning process and it is the stage where the fruits of education mature and is made ready for the benefit of the society. Therefore, managing this stage of education is important and critical to the development of a sound and desired human capital needed for the growth and development of a nation. Given the salient position knowledge has placed itself as the most important factor of production in the present day globalised economy, the need for developing countries such as Nigeria to pay a serious attention in attaining an effective and result-oriented management of higher education cannot be overemphasized. This paper examined higher education management in Nigeria with specific reference to the Open and Distance Education (ODE) institutions in the country. It brought to the fore some of the challenges being faced by the operators and advanced some recommendations thereafter.
The preceding discussions in this paper have highlighted the peculiar nature of Open and Distance Education system and the uniqueness of its management. The operators are facing some challenges ranging from poor perception and discrimination among others. Recommendations tailored towards addressing some of the problems were offered to help combat them. ODE system is indeed a recipe for the attainment of EFA goals and in the provision of vacancies for the teeming applicants into the higher institutions. The support of all stakeholders is needed in assisting the ODE institutions to bridge the wide gap between the number of vacancies available and those who aspire to occupy them.
