LOCAL GOVERNMENT REVENUE GENERATION IN NIGERIA: AN ASSESSMENT OF IGRS OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN KADUNA STATE

ABSTRACT
The performance of the Local Governments in Nigeria in meeting the yearnings of its residents have continuously fallen below expectation. One of the reasons usually put forth by observers has always been inadequate funding. This study examines various Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) sources of the local governments and adopted secondary data sources for its analysis. The study therefore, finds among other things that over dependence, corruption among revenue collectors, low revenue yield, improper accounting practices etc; constitute the cogs in the wheel of the local governments revenue generation particularly the IGRs. The paper recommends that the local government should tap the existing revenue sources to its fullest and exploit new revenue sources through innovative and strategic mechanisms, it should block all leakages that give room to corruption and wastages through comprehensive supervision and inspection and installing and maintaining sound and reliable accounting practices in the revenue administration of the local governments
