ABSTRACT

Remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils and related environment is becoming a global challenge. Heavy metal pollution has resulted to several health disorders and death of thousands of people globally, including children, which requires immediate remediation. Biological, chemical and physical technologies of soil remediation including phytoremediation, electrodialytic and electrokinetic remediation, use of chelating agents, biochar, steaming, excavation, microwaving and infrared radiation have been discussed in the paper.The advantages and disadvantages of each have been highlighted for adoption, depending on circumstances. Sources of heavy metal pollution in soils, its manifestation, risk and harmful effects were also critically reviewed.
