ABSTRACT
Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of ovaprim diluted with normal saline at six levels: 0% (I), 20% (II), 40% (III), 60% (IV), 80% (V) and 100% (VI) on the induced breeding indices of Clarias gariepinus. Mean weight of eggs collected were 57.15g , 46.81g, 51.63g and 41.76g for treatments I, II, III, IV, V and VI respectively. Ovulation occurred in four treatments with mean percentages of 81.4% (IV) to 93.5% (I).The lowest mean percentage viability was recorded in treatment IV (77.5%) while the highest was in treatment I (89.2%). For mean percentage fertilization, the difference of the values ranged between 52.5% in treatment IV and 75.1% in treatment I. Mean percentage hatching and mean percentage survival ranged from 54.1% (IV) to 87.5% (I) and 55.0% (I) to 57.3% (III), respectively. Mean percentage ovulation, fertilization and hatching varied significantly (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the mean percentage viability and survival (P>0.05). No ovulation occurred in female Clarias gariepinus induced to spawn with 80% normal saline diluted ovaprim and 100% normal saline. Water quality parameters were within acceptable limits. Clarias gariepinus can be induced to spawn with 60% normal saline diluted ovaprim.
SUMMARY:
No ovulation occurred in female Clarias gariepinus induced to spawn with 80% normal saline diluted ovaprim and 100% normal saline. Water quality parameters were within acceptable limits. Clarias gariepinus can be induced to spawn with 60% normal saline diluted ovaprim.
