Title: DETERMINATION OF SELECTED ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF BAMBARA NUT (VIGNA SUBTERRANEAN (L.)VERDC.) SEEDS

Knowledge of physical properties of agricultural materials plays important roles in the design and development of post-harvest handling equipment and machines. This study was conducted to investigate some physical properties of bambara nut seeds relevant to the design and development of equipment and machines for its harvesting, processing, transportation, cleaning, sorting, separation, packaging and storage. At the moisture content of 10.35% (w.b), the three principal axial dimensions (a, b and c) were measured. Using mean values of the major diameter (a), intermediate diameter (b) and minor diameter (c), mean geometric mean diameter, arithmetic mean diameter, square mean diameter, equivalent mean diameter, surface area and sphericity of the seeds were calculated. The mean true density, bulk density, porosity and angle of repose for the seeds were also determined. Using two structural material surfaces namely plywood and galvanized iron sheets, the static coefficient of friction for the bambara nut seeds was as well determined. The results gave mean values of 7.38 0.10mm, 5.00 0.01mm and 5.33 0.18mm for major, intermediate and minor diameters of the seeds, respectively; 5.82 0.08mm, 5.89 0.08mm, 5.83 0.03mm and 5.85 0.07mm for the geometric, arithmetic, square and equivalent mean diameters, and 7.58 0.05mm2 and 2.99 0.09 for the surface area and sphericity of the seeds, respectively. The mean true density, bulk density and the porosity of the seeds were estimated at 0.92 0.02gmm-3 , 0.83 0.07gmm-3 and 09 1.53%, respectively. While the natural angle of repose for the seeds was 46 0.71 , the coefficient of static friction for the seeds on the surfaces of plywood and galvanized iron sheets were found as 0.46 0.02 and 0.45 0.02 , respectively. Data generated from this study can be used for design and adjustment of post-harvest handling equipment and machines for bambara nut.
