Title: DETERMINATION OF THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF SOME COWPEA (VIGNA UNGUICULATA(L.)WALP VARIETIES EXPOSED TO CALLOSOBRUCHUS MACULATUS (F.) (COLEOPTERA: CHRYSOMELIDAE)

The susceptibility to bruchid damage of seeds of two local cowpea cultivars (Matankanawa and Kanannado white) and four improved cowpea cultivars (Sampea-6, Sampea7, Sampea-9 and Sampea-12) was evaluated. The seeds were artificially infested with cowpea bruchid (Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and evaluated under Laboratory conditions at 220C to 320C and 66 % to 78 % Relative Humidity (RH) between April and July, 2016. Parameters evaluated include oviposition, adult mortality, adult emergence, seed damage, seed weight loss, median emergence time and susceptibility of each cowpea cultivar to cowpea bruchid infestation. The values of the parameters collected were analyzed using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the separation of means was done using Student Newman Keuls (SNK). The result indicated that there was no significant (p>0.05) difference in the susceptibility of all the cowpea cultivars evaluated. All the six cowpea cultivars evaluated were susceptible to the bruchid attack. Results obtained in this study indicated the need for breeders to develop high yielding cowpea cultivars with relatively high resistance to attack by the cowpea bruchid.
